Men and Therapy

This is dedicated to the guys today, but it can easily apply to anyone.

I was driving with a buddy up in the bush the other day when suddenly a weird humming

sound developed from underneath the hood. He pulled over to take a peek and when he

couldn’t diagnose the problem, he jumped back into the truck. The first thing he said to me

was: ‘Well, I guess I’m calling the shop when I get home!’

He didn’t hesitate for a second deciding to get professional help with his truck…….Why then

are we so reluctant to do the same thing when it comes to our mental health? Very few men

are capable of fixing their own vehicles these days, and the same can be said of our mental

health.

I recently wrote an article called, ‘The Rock Bottom Fallacy’ where I describe how

counter-intuitive it is to prolong treatment until things are at their worst. We don’t wait until

stage four to treat cancer, why are we waiting so long to get help with our substance use and

mental health?

There is enough stigma already surrounding men and this belief of needing to suppress our

emotions, our vulnerability, our fears. Therapy isn’t just for those struggling or broken. It is

incredibly beneficial for prevention and maintenance of an already productive life.

The most successful men I know surround themselves with experts and regularly see

coaches and counsellors to keep them functioning at a high level. I see someone regularly

myself and want to stay out of the shadows-encouraging other men to get out of their

comfort zone and take a peek under their own hood.

Nothing you are experiencing is too trivial to discuss with a professional. If you feel you

need to talk about ANYTHING……connect with me today!
