What Is Your Why?

I've been talking a lot about goals lately which is understandable as we are officially a

week into the New Year. Many have used this as an opportunity to start fresh and make

some resolutions or personal goals and I'm grateful to have been a part of the guiding

process for some of you.

One of the biggest struggles people seem to have with this process isn't figuring out

what they want….. but WHY THEY WANT IT.

This is the crucial element!

How many of you have started a goal only to fall off track or give up completely after a

few weeks or a couple months? One of the reasons could be that you haven't come up

with a clear enough reason for why you want to achieve that goal.

The why is what drives us to succeed! The why is a finish line that provides focus and

clarity so that we commit to pursuing our goals and not give up until it's accomplished. It

also allows us to maintain that vision once it's achieved.

Here's an example from one of my clients during our first goal setting session together:

Client: I want to quit drinking

Me: Why?

Client: Because I have to

Me: (again) Why?

Client: (pauses) I'm letting my family down and I'm not being the parent I want to be for

my kids

Me: Tell me who you want to be for your kids

Client: (thinking for a few minutes) I want to be present for them, not hungover and angry

all the time. I don't want them to be scared of me, I want to be the parent they deserve.

Me: What do they deserve?

Client: (getting emotional) They deserve to have a dad in their life that loves them,

supports them, takes them hunting, spends time with them and teaches them about life.

Me: So what's your goal really?

Client: (Spark gets ignited) I want to become the best father I can be to my kids. To be

the father that I never had. I want them to brag to their friends about how awesome their

dad is!

Me: Perfect. Now let's start becoming that person!

Can you see the difference that knowing ‘your why’ can make? The result is a completely

different mindset! His drinking is just an obstacle in the way of accomplishing his

ultimate goal. I'm much more confident that this individual is going to achieve their goal

because he has found his true purpose in doing so. He has discovered his why.

What is it that you desire? If you are sitting here wondering if you have reached your true

potential, or if you are unsure of what that even is….. Let's talk!

I can help you discover your why and together we can determine the best path to get you

there. I'll walk beside you the entire way!
